Our Horses -
The REAL workers at West Fields Ranch

We value our horses at West Fields Ranch. Several of them have been carrying members of our family on rides for more than 10 years. Some are new to use this year.

We feed them top quality feeds matched to their work, give the the best veterinary and farrier care available. They are ready and eager to take you on a magical experience.

Tzadik (said "Saw-deek") is a Champion Endurance horse. He and West Fields Ranch-owner, Byron Harward, were given the award as "Utah's best Endurance Horse and Rider Team" in 1996 and have completed over 1250 miles in Endurance Races. Endurance riding is the sport of 50+ mile races (all properly under the control of veterinarians to protect the horses.) In 1995 Tzadik carried Byron to win the 250 mile XP race (50 miles per day for 5 days in a row.) Tzadik is the horse we have owned the longest. He is a 16 year old Arabian gelding, he stands 15 hands, 2 inces (5 feet 2 inches at the shoulder.) Tzadik has been called Byron's "cruise-control" horse by one of Byron's long-time riding companions.
Teddy Bear is a new member of our team. He is a Quarter horse and comes from a lot of ranch experience and team-roping work. He is called Teddy Bear for two reasons: 1) His Teddy Bear shaped ears (they were frost-bitten when he was a colt) and 2) His very unflappable, easy-going, lovable temperament. He is our biggest horse at 16 hands, but our little 5-year-old grandson loves to ride him.
Scarlett is also a new member of our team. She comes from being a lesson horse where lots of kids and adults learned to ride on her. She is a 17-year-old Quarter horse and stands about 15 hands. She is a sweet heart.
Tropico has been part of our team since he was born. He was bottle fed and is easy to catch and handle. He LOVES to jump things. When we come to a trickle of water or a little log in the path, he will jump it like it was 5 feet wide. Needless to say, either Byron (as the guide for the rides) or another experienced rider takes Tropico when we go on the more "back-woods" trails. Tropic is great for anyone if we are on an improved trail with nothing to jump. Tropico is a Quarter/Arabian cross and stands 15 hands 3 inches and is a strong horse.
Fletch has been part of our team almost as long as Tzadik. He is the archetype Arabian horse. He has been on lots of endurance rides carrying our daughters when they were younger. He is now 19 years old and looks and acts like he did 10 years ago. He is one of our shorter horses at 15 hands.
Big Boy is a mountain horse. He can handle the wild without any trail. He was raised in the mountains, free to roam. West Fields Ranch co-owner, Terry Ann Harward, rides Big Boy when we go out together. Big boy likes to GO! We are never going fast enough or far enough for him! We take Big Boy when there is an assertive rider to ride him. A bigger man or a good rider can have a great time on an all-day ride on Big Boy. Big Boy is a 16 year old Quarter/Thorough Bred cross and stands 15 hands 2 inches.
Rag-to-Riches (we just call her Rags) is oar oldest and shortest horse. She just joined our team. She was something of a "rescue" horse. A prior owner had gotten Alzheimer's and this poor horse was not properly cared for. We have been working with our vet to get her back in good shape. This is the other horse that our 5-year-old grandson likes to ride. She is great for a young or small person to ride. She is an Arabian and is 23 years old. She is just a little over 14 hands high and takes care of her rider.
Tiger Lily is our youngest horse. She turned three in 2003. She is just beginning her training and it will be a while and a lot of miles before we use her for guests. However, Tiger Lily is the friendliest horse on the place. She things she is a person and tha all people are her friends. Byron can actually crawl under her belly and she doesn't mind. She just has a lot to learn. She is an Arab-cross with a lot of other breeds in the "cross." While she looks like a point now, in a couple of years she will probably be all white like her mom.
